In general the data reflects the situation at the end of the reference year. EU data are extracted from the Community Fishing Fleet Register managed by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Data for Iceland and Norway are supplied directly by the national authorities.

Total tonnage of the fishing fleets of the individual EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. During the period covered by the source table, the definition for tonnage changed from “Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT)” to “Gross Tonnage (GT)”; however the national administrations implemented it in different moments (mainly between 1982 to 1994) and GRT could still be used for old vessels. This may cause non-comparability of data over time and between countries.
